Moving your home is incredibly stressful. But before you throw up your hands in frustration, check out these top packing tips to help alleviate the stress. Take it slow, get organized and take shortcuts whenever possible!

1.  Bag Hanging Clothes

Place a trash bag over your clothes on hangers, poking a hole in the top. No need to take everything off the racks and hangers. Transport them as is for easier setup in the new place. You could even place a rubber band around the hangers for extra support.

2.  Pack a “First Day Box”

Fill a box with all the essentials you will likely need on the first day, including toilet paper, cleaning supplies, trash bags, paper plates, napkins and more. Bring this box with you as you travel to your new place.

3. Put Stuff in Stuff

Why leave a space empty when you could fill it with smaller things? Put spices in your pots and clothing in your luggage to make sure you use every nook and cranny in a sensible way.

4. Color Code Boxes

Label each box with the contents, and use a different color for each room. Red for kitchen, blue for bathroom, yellow for play room, etc. This way, you will know exactly where they will have to be placed in the new home.

5. Write Out a List

As you pack, make note of all your belongings and the contents of each box. This helps with inventory control and it helps you know which boxes take priority when it comes time to unpack.

6. Label Plugs

Electrical wires are a nightmare to reassemble, so save yourself sanity and time by labeling your plugs. It’s even a good idea to take a photo of the wiring so you can have a visual when trying to plug everything back in.

7. Protect Breakables

Keep delicate items secure in their boxes by putting paper inside them and securing with bubble wrap on the outside. This will save you heartache later when you open up a box and something has been broken due to poor packing.

8. Group Like Items

Use plastic baggies to group like items together and prevent them from spilling or getting lost, such as bathroom toiletries like shampoo, small nuts and bolts to furniture, electronics chargers and accessories, etc.

9. Roll Your Clothes

You’ll save more space when you roll clothes up neatly. Bonus: they don’t get creased this way either! This is a great way to avoid wrinkles and having to iron everything once you get settled in.

10. De-Clutter

Overwhelmed by the sheer volume of stuff you have? It’s a good idea to purge before you start packing. You’ll save space and money, as you will have less stuff for the movers to transport. Clear the clutter by giving things away, selling them online or making donations.

11. Make the Bed First

Upon arrival in your new digs, head straight to the bedroom and make your bed. You’ll be exhausted from the hustle and bustle of the move and the last thing you will want to do is put sheets on right before you fall into bed.

12. Get the Kids Involved

Give each kid a cardboard box and instruct them to pack their favorite toys, pajamas, games and stuffed animals to bring with them in the car on moving day. If they want, they can each decorate their own box. Then, they’ll be responsible for unpacking their own boxes upon arrival. Bonus: they’ll feel comforted being surrounded with all their familiar items.

13. Wrap Cutlery

Tape and wrap up your cutlery drawer as is. You’ll save time and effort packing and unpacking everything. Then, all you have to do once in your new home is take off the tape and slide it into place.

14. Wear Comfortable Clothing

Wear your most comfortable and most practical outfit for moving day, such as jeans, sweats, leggings, t shirts and sweatshirts. It’s a good idea to dress in layers so you can peel off pieces when you start getting overheated from all that moving.

Now that you have all the best hacks for packing and moving, you can start planning a seamless move!
